Cup Semi Final v St Johns
The cup dream is over!! The boys battled well today. We lost 5-0 but I don't think that tells the full story.
The game started and straight away St Johns were pressurising us, as we knew they would. They found it hard to break through and all the blocking, shielding and jockeying training was paying off.
There was some great defending from Will and Sam, assisted down the flanks by Jack and Freddie. Jake managed to hold the middle and linked well with Charlie up front. If they managed to get passed our defence they then had Ollie to contend with!!
They finally managed a scrappy goal to take the lead 1-0.
We attacked straight from kick-off and some great work between Jake and Charlie almost ended in a quick equaliser.
Ryan and Matty came on got stuck in straight away. There was some great passing and movement between Ryan, Jack and Jake that almost got us through on goal again.
The half finished 1-0 with Felixstowe in attack. I think at that point St Johns were possibly a bit surprised that they weren't having it all their own way.
In the second half we had the wind behind us and started off confidently. Our tackling continued to keep them at bay.
St Johns got their second thanks to a long ball which found their attacker on his own with only Ollie to beat. He took his chance well.
There followed a brief spell where St Johns passing and movement was on another level. They attacked quickly and scored another couple in quick succession. Suddenly we were 4-0 down and looking a little bit shell-shocked. We pulled ourselves together and got back into the game. They managed another later in the game to make it 5-0.
I think our first half performance was one of the best we have had all season. Every player worked his socks off, kept his position and made life very difficult for the opposition. Everyone of them can be very proud of themselves.
After all that effort it wasn't too surprising that tiredness would come into it.
Getting to the Semi Final in any competition is a fantastic acheivement. We are now in a position where a couple of similar performances as today and we will stay in the top league. I've told the boys we now have three cup finals left!!
Congratulations to St Johns. They played very well and we wish them all the best in the final.
