Sizewell & Knodishall 27th September 2008

Match Reports

This was only our second league game of the season. It seems ages ago that we started the campaign so well against Trimley. Could we pick up where we left off and get three more points on the board?

A Game

The line up was - Ollie S in goal, Connor S in defence, Freddie, Charlie B and Will across midfield, Jack and Matty up front. Sam and Ollie Mac on the bench.

Sizewell were unable to play the first match against Chantry and had to forfeit the points. They had drawn their next two matches coming from behind both times. The game kicked off and we went straight into attack. We've worked very hard on passing and moving and playing as a team. Today it went even better than the Trimley game. Sizewell struggled to contain our movement as we created chance after chance. The only thing we lacked was the killer finish although we came very close on a number of occassions. Finally Will sent the ball across to Matty who had options to lay the ball off to a couple of team mates. However as the Sizewell defence had backed off he had time and space to quickly turn and fire the ball low into the net. At last we had got the goal we deserved. 1-0. Sizewells best two players were their stiker and right winger. They were no match however for Freddie on our left and especially Connor in defence. They couldn't break through. Later in the half Jack collected the ball on the half way line, a great ball found Freddies overlapping run as he outstripped the defender and crossed into the box where Will controlled it and banged it in. 2-0. This was the half-time score. It could easily have been 12-0 given the chances we were creating. Will and Charlie made way for Ollie and Sam.
Sizewell came out fighting and had the better of the first few minutes of the half. At only 2-0 we weren't safe yet. We had a bit of a scramble in their box when the ball fell to Freddie who shot low and hard. The keeper managed to get a block on it but the power carried it through his legs and over the line. 3-0. The game started to open up a bit more. Matty sent through a great ball into the path of Jack who was bombing forward and carried on to fire low past the keeper. 4-0. Ollie Mac and Sam were both unlucky not to score with some powerful efforts that narrowly missed the target. Will and Charlie replaced Matty and Freddie and both went upfront. Jack moved into midfield. Will made a great run down the right and found Charlie at the back post, who finished with a first time strike. 5-0. Will became provider again with a very similar move, this time it was Jack who scored to round off the game 6-0.
This was another fantastic display from our lads. The most pleasing aspect was the way we performed as a team. We never had to rely on one single player and each boy played his part. Another mention for Ollie Spinks distribution. He had a quiet day thanks to our defensive strengths but whenever he got the ball we knew he'd get it to a wide player with a well aimed throw. Usually catching the opposition unaware.
Man of the match was easy to award this week. The whole team get it jointly and I'll defy anyone to pick out a star player today above anyone else. Please use the comments section if you have any.

B Game

The starting line up was Alex with his first ever time in goal, Dan in defence, Curtis, Keiran and Cameron across midfield, Nat and Jake up front. Connor R, Charlie W and Kyle on the bench.
The game kicked off. Me and Steve were just making our way to the side of the pitch when Nat "the goal machine" Adams took the ball passed 4 players and opened the scoring. Another player told me this as both me and Steve missed it. There were 15 seconds on the clock, a new unbeatable club record!! We pressed forward again and picked up where the A team left off. Once again the teamwork ensured we were creating space for each other and scoring chances. New signing Curtis on his debut caused Sizewell lots of problems down our left as he linked up with ex-Whitton team-mate Keiran. We won a corner and went through our well rehearsed formation. All the training paid off as Curtis' superb corner was met by an advancing Nat who headed powerfully into the goal from almost the penalty spot. 2-o. Moments later Keiran won the ball in midfield and played a superb through ball for Jake. despite the attentions of a much larger defender Jake held him off and scored low into the net. 3-0. Jake was causing them as many problems on the right as Curtis was on the left. A great run down the wing ended with him putting in a great cross which Nat finished off for his hat-trick. 4-0. Keiran was having his best game so far for us. He was breaking every attack down in the centre and then laying the wide to either Cammy or Curtis. He again won the ball in the middle and sent Curtis on his way. Curtis hit a powerful shot from wide on the left which went in off the post. A great debut league goal. Jake got his second with a finish at the back post. Cammy scored our seventh again at the back post. (again I'm not sure who crossed it!) Sizewell were unable to get past our midfield which meant a quiet half for Dan in defence and rookie keeper Alex. They did get a free kick just outside the box. The well struck shot was well saved by Alex in only his second touch of the ball. the other being a goal kick!! Half time 7-0.
Nat, Jake and Dan made way for Connor and Charlie up front and Kyle in defence.
We decided to pretend the score was back to 0-0 to make the second half more of a challenge. The game kicked off and with 10 seconds on the clock an incredulous Nat saw his record crumble as Charlie Wilson banged in his first of the game. Nat fought his corner well from the touchline and despite having no watch or any time keeping device of any nature and the ref confirming the time on his watch as 10 seconds, he decided it must have been more than 15 seconds as he felt it was longer!! The sort of logic you just can't argue against!!
We dominated the half but were unable to finish as well. Keiran came close on a couple of occassions for a well deserved goal. Charlie scored his second of the day(I'm afraid once again the details escape me) Cammy, Curtis and Keiran came off and Dan, Nat and Jake made up the midfield. Alex had a couple of saves to make and impressed with his kicking. In the dying minutes Charlies cross was headed in at the back post by Connor to make the final score 10-0!
Another superb performance.

Man of the match went to Keiran. He didn't get on the scoresheet himself but was involved in almost every move we had.

What a day. The sun was shining, We won both games, scored 16 goals, 11 different boys got on the scoresheet, two clean sheets for the defenders and keepers and above all two hard fought team performances. I wish every Saturday was like this!!!

Freddie's match report

Freddie wrote his own report on the game as he saw it, from a players point of view. I've posted it word for word. I've spruced up the puntcuation slightly.

Match Report by Freddie McDade

I think the B's done well. We let in a silly goal at the start and then we scored twice and became the comeback kings. Then we got some good tackles in and Harley got some great saves in. Then Chantry were pulling back. It became an even closer game and then Nat got a goal. Then Keiran done some great set ups though the keeper saved them. Then later on Chantry got another and another and the Chantry fans were going mad. Then Keiran set me up and I hit the post then off the rebound I scored. After that I didn't hear a word from Chantry. Then to make it better me and Nat had a confusing moment and Nat scored and we won 5-3.

Chantry Grasshoppers Friendly Match Report 20th September 2008

As this was a friendly we decided to mix things around a bit and try some players out in new positions. We started with Ollie S in goal, Connor S in defence, Matty, Charlie B and Will along the midfield, with Jack and Curtis up front. Cameron and Ollie Mac on the bench.
We got off to a flier and looked the better team. Jack scored after 6 minutes and added a second 2 minutes later.(apologies for the lack of detail arounfd the goals as I my notes are rubbish) I had a strong feeling there were plenty more goals to come. (I was right but more of that later!) We continued to press with Chantry getting more into the game. At half time we switched a few players around. Charlie and Matty came off. Cammy went into defence for the first time, Curtis moved to left midfield, with Will in the centre and Ollie Mac on the right. Connor moved from defender to striker. This is when the rest of the goals started to fly in. Unfortunately they were all chantry goals as we managed to turn a 2-0 lead into a 5-2 defeat. Chantry banged in a couple of good goals but were gifted several more as we started making mistakes all over the pitch. This is the whole point of friendlies. Get the mistakes out of the way when there is nothing at stake. A special mention must go to a couple of their fans for their outrageously over the top celebrations. The Chantry manager was a bit embarrassed to say the least. If ever we had inspiration to beat them in the league.....

Man of the match was Jack Moss for his work rate and passing. The goals are just a bonus.

B Game

This is my report. Freddie has written his own which I will post word for word. If any of the boys want to send me their views on a match I'll post them on the site. Maybe Jack can fill me in on his goals from the A game!! If you look further back in the archive postings you'll find Ollie Spink's report from one of the tournaments we played in. The boys always remember a lot more detail than I do!! (22/7/07 Wickham Market Tournament)

The line up was Harley in goal, Sam in defence, Freddie, Keiran and Alex across midfield, Nat and Jake up front. Charlie W and Dan on the bench.

Chantry started very brightly and took an early lead. I thought we were in for a torrid time again. We started to pass the ball better and after some great linking play with Freddie, Jake got the equaliser. Jake then became the provider and set up Nat to put us 2-1 up. Soon after a great pass from Keiran set Nat up for his second. 3-1 Half-time.
Charlie replaced Alex on the right and Dan tried his hand up front, replacing Jake. Chantry again picked up their game and pulled one back. We were playing well and pushing forward when Chantry scored again to equalise. ( I won't mention their fans as Freddie covers it better than I could from a players point of view.) once again we'd let a 2 goal cushion disappear. This time however we attacked straight away after some great battling by Alex and Nat, Freddie beat their keeper with a ferocious shot. The chantry manager shouted great goal as it smacked the post. Luckily Freddie had followed in and smashed in the rebound. 4-3. A few minutes later Keiran found Freddie with a superb pass that left him only needing to tap it in to an empty net, only to be tackled by Nat who then(luckily for him) finished it to make it 5-3. There were some great performances to note. Harley made his usual quota of saves, great defensive work by Sam at the back. We were again impressed witht his never say die attitude. If a player got past him as a few of them did, he was straight back in their winning it back. Keiran had a great game in the middle of midfield. Nat added a hat-trick to his tally( he almost got one against Trimley but our own player cleared it off the line!!)
Man of the Match was Freddie for his runs, passes and overall composure on the ball.

F&W Utd v Trimley Red Devils 6th September 2008

Match Reports

A Game

A great start to the season beating local rivals Trimley Red Devils 5-1. Will opened the scoring with a headed goal from Jack’s corner. Freddie managed to get past two players at the left hand corner to get a cross in which Matty finished in style. Matty added his second soon after to make it 3-0. Connor S defended superbly, Trimley only got past him once which led to their only goal of the game, to make it 3-1 at half time. Ollie S was as safe as ever in goal. His distribution was superb, mixing his kicks and throws to get attacks started straight from defence.
Jack and Will worked really hard up and down the wings and were replaced at half-time by Sam and Keiran, joining Charlie B in the midfield. Matty completed his hat-trick with a superb shot from the edge of the box into the top corner 4-1. Freddie made it 5-1 with a long range effort that went over the keeper and dipped into the top corner. Overall a great team performance.
Final score 5-1. Matty Harrold was named man of the match after a great performance and superb hat-trick.

B Game

Another good team performance. The first half was pretty close with neither team making too many clear cut chances. Harley made some good saves in goal keeping the scores level. Kyle kept their striker under control whilst Alex, Cameron and Ollie Mac worked hard in midfield. As the half went on Jake and Charlie W up front managed to get themselves into more attacking positions with Jake scoring from inside the box just before half time after a great interception and pass from Cameron. Connor R and Nat came on at half time. Nat quickly got himself on the scoresheet to make it 2-0. This time Ollie Mac the provider. Ollie again set up the chance for Charlie to score our third. Ollie completed his hat trick of assists by combining with Charlie to set Nat up for his second and our fourth. Nat narrowly missed out on his hat trick when a goal mouth skirmish ended with the ball hitting our own player on their goalline and going out for a goal kick. The final score was 4-0. Although the boys deserved the win the score line could have been very different had Harley not pulled off a string of great saves and Kyle not defended so strongly. Man of the match was Harley narrowly pipping Ollie and Kyle for the position.

Friendly v Felixstowe Hawks continued

Dan came on and worked well up and down the flank. The game ended 0-0 which doesn't relate to this exciting game. It could easily have been 6-6.

The B game line up was Ollie in goal, Connor S in defence, Connor R Kyle and Dan across the midfield and Jake & Charlie W up front.

The Hawks took a very early lead and before we knew it were two up. The third goal went in and I thought we were in for a thrashing. The boys rallied and began passing and winning tackles, getting more into the game. At half time we made a few changes. Will replaced Ollie in goal, Kyle moved to defence and Freddie replaced him in the middle. Later on in the half Jack took over from Dan on the left, and Matty replaced Connor on the right.
We lost another goal early in the second half when Will dived over the ball for no apparent reason!! Freddie pulled one back with a shot to the back post from a tight angle 1-4. The passing a moving play improved as the game went on and we started to impose ourselves on the game. Kyle was notable for his performance in defence. Charlie and Jake worked hard up front and were both unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Freddie got a second after a sustained period of pressure on their goal. He was able to control the ball in the box and turn his defender, blasting it high into the corner over the keeper. 2-4. In the dying minutes Jack was brought down in the box, losing a boot in the process and bravely stood up and demanded the penalty. Infront of his team mates(Us) and his school mates(The Hawks) he had the bottle to go for it. Only to scuff the shot and make it an easy save for the keeper. I'm sure no one mentioned it when they went back to school!!!
The game ended straight after the penalty. Considering we were 4-0 down at one point the boys should good character fighting back and but for a little bit of luck might have even taken the game.

overall they were two good games to try out our new formation. We think it worked well and are looking forward to the start of the season.
